Pollutant Standards Index

June 21, 2013

The Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) is based on five pollutants:

1. Particulate Matter (PM10)

2. Ozone

3. Sulphur Dioxide

4. Carbon Monoxide

5. Nitrogen Dioxide

Each pollutant has a sub-index calculated from a segmented linear function that transforms ambient concentrations onto a scale extending from 0 through 500. The overall index is calculated as the maximum of the sub-indices. Haze in Singapore has been happening regularly, and it is unlikely to go away as long as errant companies continue their burning activities. The rate of global warming is also likely to be accelerated.
