## What Is Electromotive Force?

The name may give you the impression that electromotive force is a type of force. Actually, it is not. To put it in simple words, an electromotive force is an energy that can cause current to flow in an electrical circuit or device and is abbreviated as EMF.

Electromotive force can be defined as the energy per unit charge causing the charge to move through the circuit also known as voltage. It is the measure of energy which causes the flow of current through a circuit or conductor denoted in volts or Joules per charge.

## Main Sources of Electromotive Force

Any device that provides electrical energy can be called as an electromotive force. A few of the examples of electromotive force include electrochemical cells, thermoelectric devices, solar cells, electrical generators, transformers, etc.

Electrochemical cells: It is a device which is capable of producing electrical energy through chemical reactions. The basic structure of an electrochemical cell is comprised of an anode and a cathode. Electrochemical cells are divided into galvanic cells and electrolytic cells.

Electrical generators: They are devices which convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. It induces electromotive force by rotating a coil in the magnetic field. The generators force electric charges to flow through an external electrical circuit.

Thermoelectric devices: A thermoelectric device creates a voltage when there is a different temperature on each side.

Solar cells: As the name suggests, solar cells converts the energy in light into electrical energy. It is also called as photovoltaic cell.
