Physics Event of the Century: 15 Feburary 2013 0926 hrs EST – A Message from the Heavens…
Meteor entered the Earth’s atmosphere at a speed of at least 54,000 km/h (cars on expressways are about 90 km/h) about 30 to 50 kilometers above ground. The amount of energy release was equivalent to about 500 kilotons of TNT, 40 times more powerful than the atomic bomb used in WW2. Supersonic boom (due to meteor travelling faster than the speed of sound) was created and shockwaves caused close to 1000 injured and $33M in damages.
This concepts covered in our A level Physics tuition lessons such as those of Work Energy Power, Kinematics, Gravitation and Waves are relevant for this once in lifetime phenomenon. Apply some of the concepts you have learnt to this real life event!
